Political Econ Assistant
Basic Function of Position
Analyze and report on major developments in Russian domestic politics, foreign policy, and economic matters. Maintain an extensive range of relatively high-level contacts in the government, press, and think tanks focusing on Russian politics and economics.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Research (25%):
Conduct research for factual and analytical section reporting on Russian foreign, domestic, and economic policy by obtaining information from published sources. Analyze press reports, government statements, and pending legislation for potential effect on U.S. interests and significance to Russian political life and economic development.
Reports (20%):
Draft written reports and cables on specific issues as assigned, providing factual information and analysis regarding likely future developments that will affect U.S. foreign policy interests.
Congressionally mandated reports (15%):
Contribute to researching and drafting of Congressionally mandated reports.
Press Review (15%):
Survey daily and weekly press, internet websites, and government press releases to identify significant political and economic developments and provide written updates, calendars, and emails to section officers for their awareness.
Press Review (10%):
Monitor developments in Russian regions as assigned to assist in embassy reporting on domestic political and economic issues and assist and accompany officers on trips as authorized
Local Contacts (5%):
Develop and maintain broad contacts at appropriately high levels among government officials, media and think tanks within Russia and provide guidance and assistance to section officers on meeting officials, experts and activists engaged on matters important to U.S. policy toward Russia
Visit Assistance (5%):
Assist visiting officials by helping to arrange appointments, providing written briefing materials, and accompanying them to meetings with government and other officials, and, if necessary, acting as an interpreter as needed.
Russian-language support (5%):
Provide Russian-language support and interpretation to officers.
Qualifications
-Fluent in speaking, reading and writing Russian.
-21 years of age, completed secondary school or obtained a GED.
-Top Secret clearance is required.
-College degree or equivalent in political science, international relations, security policy, history, economics, or journalism is required.
-Three years of experience in social science research and analysis in the field of politics, newspaper or journalistic reporting on political and economic matters, teaching, or other closely related fields.
-Ability to prepare documents and speeches in Russian and English and prepare written and oral analysis on political and economic developments.
