The Mission Systems Engineering Autonomy & Mission Engineering Solutions Department (AMES) is seeking a dynamic Software or Systems Engineer to support integration activities within our Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) business area. The successful candidate will have a passion for innovation and the drive to see new technology and capability mature into systems solutions. This role will be responsible for development, integration, and test of the RapidEdge™ Mission System and associated hierarchical mission autonomy functionality for coordinated teams of sUAS platforms.  

Our engineering team touches all aspects and products within the department with opportunities to influence and own forward looking strategic planning, designing roadmaps, and architectures.  This position has opportunities for direct customer and end user interaction as well as coordination across various subsystem teams and stakeholders.

Primary Responsibilities: 

Integration lab management and network architecture. 

Deployment and test of software builds to the real system hardware (embedded Linux systems, UBoot) 

Initial integration of hardware and software elements, including troubleshooting networking and system configuration, including various IP-stack protocols, MIL-STD 1553, serial communications, RF communications, GPS, Linux, network router and switch management, Docker 

Getting hands-on and making things work (bash scripting, Python scripting, debugging, using oscilloscopes/volt meters/etc., and so forth) 

Hardware integration, software integration, and system of systems integration 

Using development workflow tools such as JIRA, Git, Subversion, Docker, and requirements management applications. 

Integrating and troubleshooting network connectivity issues (e.g., Linux routing, VLANs, good familiarity with IP protocol stack and protocols)  

Leading and coordinating small teams including technical aspects as well as program cost and schedule. 

Estimating, tracking, and communicating cost, schedule, and risk in support of program earned value metrics 

The successful candidate will be part of a distributed team composed of professionals from several disciplines (software, systems, hardware, autonomy algorithms/flight controls, etc.) and as such, must have strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with team members who have a diverse set of responsibilities, perspectives, and backgrounds. This position requires an individual that can perform with minimal direct supervisory support. As such the candidate must be highly motivated and a self-starter. The ability to coordinate several complex engineering activities while balancing priorities and schedules is a must. This position may require occasional travel (up to 10%).  

Basic Qualifications: 

The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:  

Experience with tools such as JIRA, Git, Subversion, Docker, and requirements management applications. 

Experience in integrating and troubleshooting network connectivity issues (e.g., Linux routing, VLANs, good familiarity with IP protocol stack and protocols)  

Familiarity with DevSecOps tools and techniques, server management, Java, C, C++ 

Background and/or knowledge of the following technologies is helpful but not required: 

UAS Command and Control (C2) Systems 

Autonomy algorithms 

Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) 

Flight Management Systems (FMS) 

Sensor fusion / sensor systems
